Lorsque une banque fait faillite, des têtes roulent - les gros titres ne pardonnent pas. Lorsque un ministre se fourvoie, les journalistes le harcèlent jusqu'à ce qu'il démissionne. Quand une autorité locale fait un gâchis de ses services de garde d'enfants, ou un hôpital du NHS bâcle les opérations, on le fait payer... Mais lorsque notre presse nationale se révèle non appropriée - comme cela a été le cas la semaine dernière par des députés à propos de l'affaire McCann, entre autres scandales - ces journalistes et rédacteurs en chef ne ressentent pas la même chose. Il n'y avait donc pas de place à la une la semaine dernière pour crier à la démission, pour n'en nommer qu'un, de Peter Hill, rédacteur en chef du Daily Express... Pas sur les pages intérieures non plus, où la couverture du rapport par le comité restreint des Communes sur les médias a montré le genre de retenue dont, il y a un an environ, les MC auraient été reconnaissants. La plupart de ces journaux étaient si économes, en fait, que leurs lecteurs pourraient être pardonnés de ne pas avoir connaissance du rapport. 

Le comité (où je suis intervenu en tant que conseiller) a répertorié des centaines, voire des centaines, d'articles faux et trompeurs sur l'affaire McCann pour lesquels les journaux ont dû payer et s'excuser. Des centaines d'articles faux et abusifs aussi concernant GA, la PJ etc. mais personne n'a protesté, ou si peu, à commencer par les interessés. Il a noté qu'il ne s'agissait que d'un échantillon d'un bassin encore plus large de mensonges, et il a cité Gerry McCann et Hill en accord avec le fait que le couple aurait pu poursuivre tous les groupes de journaux et gagner. Il s'agissait d'une rupture totale de sens et de jugement, une orgie de journalisme irresponsable d'un genre jamais vu depuis des décennies, mais les rédacteurs n'ont jamais mené d'enquête eux-mêmes et la Commission des plaintes contre la presse a attendu près d'un an avant de prononcer un avertissement. Elle n'a toujours pas jugé bon d'enquêter sur ce qui n'a pas fonctionné. À l'un des moments les plus sétendus de l'enquête des députés, on a demandé à Hill si quelqu'un à l'Express avait été sanctionné ou réprimandé. Il a répondu, le visage impassible: "Je me suis réprimandé." Et maintenant que les députés ont mis à nu tout le désordre épouvantable, les rédacteurs enterrent l'histoire à la page 94, s'ils la mentionnent.  

Ce n'est pas seulement de l'hypocrisie. C'est de la corruption et de l'abus de pouvoir. Il n'y a aucune moralité dans les journaux qui bêlent "liberté d'expression" chaque fois qu'ils perdent un cas de diffamation ou de vie privée, mais cachent ensuite toutes les vilaines vérités sur eux-mêmes. Et c'est encore pire qu'il n'y paraît. Vous pensez peut-être qu'ils le font parce qu'ils sont tous dans le même bateau et doivent couler ou nager ensemble. Non, ils font de même, même si un seul d'entre eux coule. C'est le code d'honneur des voleurs. Regardez la réponse sourde au verdict des députés sur News of the World. C'est le journal le plus vendu du pays, un vénérable de 167 ans. Vous pourriez même dire qu'il a la prétention, comme Terry, d'être une sorte de modèle. Ses dirigeants ont affirmé qu'un seul journaliste avait été impliqué dans le piratage téléphonique malgré les énormes paiements et les ordres de bâillonnement extraordinaires apparemment conçus pour garantir que la preuve de sa généralisation ne soit jamais rendue publique... Les députés ont condamné l'amnésie collective du journal, son obscurcissement persistant et ses paiements aux pirates informatiques condamnés, et ils ont trouvé inconcevable l'affirmation centrale du journal pour sa propre défense. C'était des trucs accablants...

Si ce rapport dépeint la presse populaire sous un mauvais jour, la couverture du rapport le rend encore pire. La majorité des lecteurs de journaux britanniques se sont fait cacher la vérité ou ont été trompés cyniquement. Le PCC fera-t-il quelque chose à ce sujet? Bien sûr que non.

Plusieurs journaux ont rapporté que des milliers de pages d'informations jusque-là inconnues, transmises à la police après la clôture de l'affaire, leur avaient été communiquées après qu'ils aient saisi un tribunal portugais.

L'origine de cette fausse nouvelle est Isabel Duarte qui s'est fait fort, devant le Tribunal de Lisbonne de proclamer qu'elle avait vu un dossier impressionnant et non exploité, malgré les déclarations à ce sujet, devant la Cour, de Ricardo Paiva, en charge de trier, d'éventuellement soumettre à appréciation du ministère public et d'archiver.
Les MC "ont clairement indiqué qu'ils étaient choqués de voir le manque de travail de suivi effectué par la police portugaise depuis la clôture de l'enquête", a déclaré Clarence Mitchell. "Toutes les informations contenues dans ces fichiers doivent aller aux enquêteurs privés car ce sont les seules personnes qui recherchent encore Madeleine." Il n'est interdit à personne de consulter les  archives, à Portimao.

Events this week have yet again been incomprehensible and particularly upsetting.
On Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor in Portugal released a large number of documents (relating to the investigation to find our daughter Madeleine) to the British Media, following their request for access. Disclosing such information publicly greatly jeopardises the search for Madeleine and puts witnesses and innocent members of the general public at risk (as well as causing them great anxiety). Release and publication of information in this manner also potentially compromises future investigations. It is difficult to see how anyone benefits from this week's actions.
It is imperative that the Authorities take responsibility for sensitive and confidential information. We, together with the general public, need assurances that this will not be allowed to happen again. Equally, we need absolute assurances that all credible information and leads will be investigated. We also urge each individual working for the media to consider their own personal responsibility - to put commercial interests aside occasionally and to bear in mind the potential consequences of their actions, especially when people's lives and well-being are at risk.
Our own investigators have acted professionally and with complete integrity. Today we joined hundreds of runners to take part in a 10km run in Hyde Park to support the work of the charity 'Missing People' (http://www.missingpeople.org.uk/).
'Miles for Missing People' is the first of what will now be an annual event.
Many relatives who also have a family member missing (through a variety of different circumstances) came to support the event and raise awareness for all missing children and adults.

We want to thank Martin Houghton-Brown and the team at Missing People for organising today's run, and of course for all their commitment and hard work, despite limited resources and recognition. We would also like to thank everyone who came to run and/or show their support today, as well as all those who have very generously sponsored me and the other runners. Events like that today, help to remind the world that these children and adults are still missing. By supporting such a cause, we are all giving them a much needed chance of being found - and hopefully reunited with their family.
